The Chicago Pipemaking Seminar
Every year at the world’s largest pipe show in Chicago, IL a group of world class pipemakers gather to share the skills and techniques of their craft with a group of students. Students walk in the room with empty hands, and leave with their own pipe crafted by their own hands. The seminar is lucky to have guest instructors who have traveled all over the globe drop in to offer tips, tricks, and share their experiences as craftspeople.

Making a Bent Bulldog Pipe - Pipemaking from Start to Finish
Просмотров 66 тыс.Год назад
This time around, I wanted to show you all how to create a slightly more complicated classic shape than I did in my billiard video. The bent bulldog, or Rhodesian, has been around for more than a hundred years and is a little tricky to make well because of the diamond shaped shank. This introduces a problem with the internal drilling as the shape of the stummel’s bottom is often too thin in old...

Shaping and Finishing a Handmade Mouthpiece for a Bamboo Shanked Pipe
Просмотров 19 тыс.2 года назад
Practice makes perfect. And experimentation on your own can lead to some fine results. Yet, there's nothing quite like seeing how a professional approaches a set of problems that you are faced with. This video is focused on the shaping and finishing of a mouthpiece for a bamboo shanked pipe. There are many similarities to the work that goes into a standard mouthpiece, but some of the difference...
Saving a Smooth Pipe: Removing Flaws on the Fly
Просмотров 11 тыс.3 года назад
Every pipemaker would love to produce nothing but perfectly grained, flawless pipes each and every time. But that’s just not in the hand we are dealt, as workers in briar. Flaws are an inevitability when working with this finicky and beautiful material. But what we do when we encounter them is what separates beginners from the very best. In this video I address how I handled a particular flaw t...
Three Minute Tip -- Cleaning the Airway
Просмотров 10 тыс.4 года назад
Today I've got a quick video for you, only three minutes long. It's a maintenance tip for all of you who don't clean your pipes out as often as is ideal. Believe me, I'm among you. I'll show you how to make a really useful tool to safely ream the airway in the stummel, and then how to use denatured alcohol and pipe cleaners to clear out the mouthpiece. It's fast, easy, and hopefully helpful. Vi...
Restoring Pipe Mouthpieces Without Power Tools?
Просмотров 49 тыс.4 года назад
We have all dealt with the same problem. How do you clean all that nasty oxidation off of your favorite pipe? I mean, oxidation is an inevitability with even the highest quality ebonite, but how can you get rid of it without a shop full of power tools? Moreover, how do you clean it up without ruining it? In this video I show you how to restore the glossy newness of your favorite mouthpiece with...
Let’s Talk About Hand Sanding
Просмотров 13 тыс.4 года назад
Refining and finishing a handmade pipe is largely a task done with little more than a piece of sandpaper in the hand. But factories are able to make some really nice pipes without hand sanding at all. So, why wouldn’t a pipemaker just spend his or her time practicing and perfecting the skill of sanding with a machine? In this video I address this question and then present several of the tools a...
Pipe Myths: Shellac

Like just about every subject that has captured the attention and passions of people all around the earth, pipes have garnered their fair share of myths throughout the years. If you agree, disagree, or have your own theory or opinion, share it in the comments below. A...
Let's talk about mouthpieces

What's in a mouthpiece? I mean, come on, it's just a piece of molded plastic that you hold in your teeth. It can't be THAT complicated. So sit back, fire up your favorite briar, and enjoy this n...
Making a Handcut Pipe Mouthpiece

Working through each of the steps that go into making a handmade mouthpiece out of ebonite. In our last video, I demonstrated how to finish a sandblasted pipe and to fabricate a decorative ring. While, I set out to finish the pipe entirely for this video, I didn’t quite get to the mouthpiece. So, that just provides an opportunity to make another video in which I make the mouthpiece. Thanks for tuning in, and let me ...

Beautiful pipe you made.. gorgeous piece of art! Can I ask you, what did you use as a "treatment" inside the bowl? I wonder what it is if it doesn't affect tabacco taste or arome when it burns. Thank you.

Hello Jeff, thank you for that fantastic video. The pipe is amazing. For me as a rather new pipe maker there are so many things i can learn from that. I have read through all the comments and i am shocked by the behavior and disrespect and just lack of appreciation some people have... the quality of the video is really really really good so i can only assume that there are a lot of working hours inside of these 30 minutes. So thx again. After reading all the comments and your answers I'd still love to ask you two questions, and i'd totally understand if you wouldnt want to answer these: 1. You mentioned that you are using shellac before the Carnauba Powder? Is it cut? And do you really spray it or apply it with a pipe cleaner? 2. I know that many pipe makers (including you if i remember right from another video) apply oil on smooth pipes. What are the best options there? Danish oil or is there better? Do you use any kind of laquer after the oil or do you just polish after using and drying the oil? Thanks again andbest regards from Austria Alex
